Practice Monday & Seaside Meet

For practice on Monday we will be doing a morning trail run on Green Lakes Trail.  Please meet at Drake Park at 8 am to carpool to the trailhead.  We will need parents and athletes to help with driving.  This trail is at high altitude and it will likely be cool in the morning so dress accordingly.  Please also bring water and a snack for after the run.  If weather is an issue we will still meet at Drake Park at 8am and carpool to an alternate location.

Also, our Seaside meet is coming up on September 18th.  This is an overnight meet and we've made the decision as a team to stay in a hotel this year.  Please bring cash or a check made out to "Mountain View Cross Country" for $20 to practice to help with the cost of your room.  The team will cover the remaining expense.  If the cost is an issue please let Mike or Megan know.

You can also make this payment online through In-Touch by clicking here.  Students use their ID number as the user name and the password is last name  (1st letter capitalized).  Cross Country is listed under the categories.

Practice Schedule 8/31 to 9/6

Great effort at practice these last few days.  We are excited to see you all perform at our first race in just 2 weeks!

Our end of season banquet has been scheduled for Sunday, November 8th at 5:30 pm at the St. Charles Conference Center.  Please add this to your calendar!  For those of you not familiar with the end of season banquet, this is our opportunity to celebrate the season and recognize all of your accomplishments as individuals and as a team.

This is our practice schedule for the week (All practices at 5:30 pm (EXCEPT FRIDAY AT 9AM - Next week we will move to 3pm):

Monday 8/31 - Meet at Mountain View track main entrance (AKA Cross Country Tree) for an endurance run and strength workout.

Tuesday 9/1 - Meet at RiverBend Park for hill repeats at Overturf Butte

Wednesday 9/2 - Meet at RiverBend Park for good form running clinic instructed by Max King courtesy of Footzone.

Thursday 9/3 - Meet at Drake Park for mile repeats

Friday 9/4 - Meet at Shevlin Park for a trail run at 9:00 AM -  Captains will lead practice

Saturday 9/5 - 2015 XC Challenge - We are encouraging broad participation in this event but also want to warn athletes that this will be a strenuous activity and while the total minimum distance from the start location to end location is about 8 miles, there is the possibility that your team could cover a greater distance depending on your navigation skills.  Think of this event as a repeat of our run up Cultus Mountain.  If you were able to run up Cultus Mountain you are more than capable of participating in this event.  We will also be able to access runners by vehicle in the case of an emergency.

We will meet in the Mountain View Bus Loop at 7:30 am to carpool to the start location of the XC Challenge.  We will be travelling on dirt forest service roads to access the start so we will need drivers with high ground clearance vehicles (No convertible VW Rabbits).  Once drivers reach the destination we will shuttle them back to the start to pickup their vehicles so that they can return for their passengers and transport them back to Mountain View.  The ending time of this event is difficult to predict but we should have all athletes back to Mountain View by 1 pm at the latest - hopefully earlier.

For this event please dress for hot, sunny weather.  You should wear a hat, sunblock, sunglasses and run with a water bottle.  No phones or other electronic devices will be allowed.  An adult will be present with each group to assist with emergencies.

Sunday 9/6 - Rest (You will need it after the XC Challenge!)

Bigfoot 10K

Parents & Athletes -

The Bigfoot run is coming up on Sunday, September 13th and is a benefit for all of the local cross country programs.  Bigfoot is the longest standing running race in Central Oregon and donates all proceeds to area high school cross country programs, but the proceeds are dependent on participants… and that's where you come in!

Our team will be helping to put the race on so no students will be participating but we need parents, other family members, friends, etc to sign up!  There is an option on the form to indicate which high school you want to support, which will increase the amount that we receive from the event.  Please consider participating if you are a parent and encourage others to participate as well (share at work, on email, Facebook, etc)

This is a fast 10K course with both a road and trail (Dirtyfoot) option and is a Central Oregon classic.  Thank you for your support of Mountain View Cross Country and this great event!

Mark your Calendars!

Cougars,

We have an upcoming event scheduled for Saturday, September 5th that you will not want to miss!  The Cross Country Challenge is best described as a competitive team style scavenger hunt/race/adventure run and will be a celebration to the end our summer training.  We hope to have every athlete participate.  The start time will be at about 9am and we should be all finished around 1pm.

In order to make this event possible we will also need volunteers! If you can help in one of the following ways please let Mike know.

1. "Shadow" a team.  For the safety of our athletes we need several physically fit adults that can cover 5-10 miles on rugged terrain by foot or mountain bike.

2. Transport athletes and volunteers.  This event will finish in a secret finish location and athletes and volunteers will need transportation back to the start to pickup vehicles.

3. Finish Setup.  Email Mike for specifics.

We are also asking for your help distributing our team fundraising letter to parents, extended family, employers, and any others that be interested in supporting our program.  These funds will help pay for team activities, equipment, and uniforms.  A copy of the letter is available at this link.  We appreciate your support!

Cultus Camp Signups

2015 Cougars -

We are excited to a continue a longstanding Mountain View Cross Country tradition with the 2015 Cultus Camp!  This annual team camp is held at Cultus Lake, located off Cascade Lakes Highway, and is an important kickoff to our regular season.  In addition to a number of fun activities, Cultus provides opportunities for relational growth, team building and quality high altitude training which combine to make this one of the most enjoyable and memorable aspects of cross country for most athletes.

Megan and I will be out of the country from 7-17 to 7-25 and the OSAA Moratorium Week is 7-26 to 8-1 which prohibits student contact with coaches.  With that in mind, registration forms for the camp need to be turned in as soon as possible.  Please turn forms in by 7/15.

Click Here for a copy of the registration form which can be turned in at practice or mailed to Mike and Megan's address, which is listed on the form.  We are asking for a $50 donation to attend the camp.  If this is cost prohibitive, please consider a smaller donation.  If you're able to donate more this will help cover the costs of those with financial needs.  For signups turned in after 7/15 we will be asking that you increase your donation to $60.  Please make checks payable to 'Mike Condon'.  Any additional funds not spent on the camp will be deposited to our team account.

We will meet at the RiverBend Parking lot at 9 am on August 5th and return there at 2 pm on Saturday, August 8th.  For more information on the camp click here to go to the Cultus page on our website.

Practice Week of 7/5 to 7/11

For our third week of practice we will continue a steady increase in mileage.  If you have not been attending practices this summer it is highly recommend that you begin to soon.  We will be adding hill/speed workouts in a couple weeks so building a base with solid mileage now will ease that transition.

Also, due to a lack of sign-ups for the freshmen camp we will be canceling it and hiking Mt. Bachelor and floating at Devil's Lake afterward as a team instead.  This hike will be in lieu of our normal Friday practice.  Meet at Drake park at 8:30am.  Parents - if you are able to drive please email Mike.  We could use a few extra drivers so kids don't need to drive.

Here is the schedule for the week:

Sunday 7/5 - Run an easy 3 to 5 miles on your own.

Monday 7/6 -  Meet at Drake Park at 8:30 am - Run Awbrey Butte

Practice Week of 6/28 - 7/4

THANK YOU to all of the volunteers that made it out to the Pacific Crest Triathlon today!  We had a great group of athletes, family members and alumni attend, and a large number that participated for two full shifts.  Your contribution to the team is greatly appreciated!

This week we will be adding Monday, Wednesday, Friday practices as well as Wednesday evening strength workouts.  If you followed the workout schedule last week, our total mileage was between 11 and 20 miles depending on the distances you chose.  This week we will bumping the mileage up to between 19 and 26 miles.  We will continue a steady progression of increased mileage over the first few weeks of practice before starting speed and hill workouts sometime in mid-July.  Attending practice or running comparable mileage on your own is critical to keeping up with your team members and reducing the possibility of injury.

Team BBQ and Other Important Info

2015 XC Cougars -

I had the opportunity to get out to Mountain View at lunch today for our last pre-season meeting for 2015 and wanted to follow-up real quick with a few things.  First of all, thank you to all of the incoming freshmen that made it to our meetings at Pilot Butte and Sky View, parents that made it to the evening info meeting, and Mountain View students that came today.  I've attached the informational handout that was passed out at these meetings in case you couldn't make it or lost your copy.

I also wanted to pass on that we have secured a location for the team kickoff BBQ which has been RESCHEDULED for June 16th at 6pm.  This is our first official team event of the 2015 season.  Please come if you can!  The Webb family (3 past XC alumni) has offered to host at the Calvary Chapel in Bend.  The team will provide buns, meat/veggie burgers, and toppings.  Please see the list below and bring something to share.  This is a great opportunity to get to know other members of the team and our coaching staff if you're new to the program.

When - June 16th at 6pm
Address - 20225 Cooley Road
Attire - We will be outside so please dress accordingly.  If there is interest we may play some ultimate frisbee.  Wear proper shoes if you want to participate in that (but no obligation).
Freshmen - Drinks
Sophomores - Dessert
Juniors - Side Dish
Seniors - Dessert

If you haven't signed up to volunteer at the Pacific Crest Triathlon on June 27th it is not too late.  We are short on volunteers and could use additional help.  The race organizer has agreed to extend our deadline.  A copy of the waiver is attached.  Please print off and turn into Mrs. Leapaldt's Room (C-4) at Mountain View or scan a signed copy and email.  Indicate on the form which shift you're available for as soon as possible. The available options are 6:00 - 10:30am and 10:00 - 2:00pm.  We need parents too!

I look forward to seeing many of you at our kickoff BBQ.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Go Cougars!
